Antipsychotic Medication Reduction with Qsource Expertise
Wharton Nursing Home (Uplands Village) joined Qsource's Culture of Safety Center (CSC) initiative in late 2023. Wharton opted to work with Qsource on reducing antipsychotic medication use. Over six months, the facility’s administrator and director of nursing partnered with Qsource on a performance improvement project (PIP). The goal was to achieve a 10% reduction in the rate of antipsychotic medications prescribed.
Initial data collection revealed a baseline antipsychotic medication rate of 44%. When the project was completed, the facility had exceeded its goals. The PIP resulted in a decrease in antipsychotic medication use from 44% to 24%.
To add to the success, Wharton Nursing Home had no deficiencies for psychotropic drug use in its most recent state survey.
